The true story behind Valentine's Day comes from the Middle Ages. Legend says that we owe the origin of Valentine's Day to a Christian martyr from the first centuries. Valentine of Terni or Valentine of Rome is a priest and monk whom Emperor Claudius II had condemned to death after he had banned marriages and while Valentine continued to marry couples in secret.

It was to send more men to war, it is said, that the emperor wanted to ban marriages. He therefore imprisoned Valentinus who had romantic relations with Julia, the daughter of his jailer.

On the day of his beheading, February 14, he wrote her a last love letter signed your Valentine. From there would come the tradition which makes him the patron saint of lovers..
